Lady Chapel restoration complete

Lady Chapel restoration complete

The feast of St John Fisher and St Thomas More (22 June) marked the completion of the restorations on the Lady Chapel that began in Easter week. We are grateful to almighty God that this work in honour of Our Lady is now complete, and we thank our benefactors for their kindness and generosity, and we thank our parishioners and visitors for their patience in these past months.

Of note are the marble Benefactors’ panels which are now cleaned and are ready to receive the names of the Benefactors of the Rosary Shrine. For more information, please visit https://rosaryshrine.co.uk/donate/support-shrine/

Below are some photos from the restoration project.

The Lady Chapel before restoration (above), and after restoration (below).

The Benefactors’ panels, which remind us to pray for the various people who paid for the church, its chapels and various altar furnishing, have now been cleaned. The photo here shows it in the process of being cleaned.

The wall of the Lady Chapel were stripped of a dark grey paint that made the chapel dark and gloomy.

The ceiling was restored and repainted in a colour that is harmonious with the rest of the church.

Violin Sonatas meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary

Violin Sonatas meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary

On Saturday 24th February at 7:30pm, the second of the three concerts that make up the complete ‘Rosary Sonatas‘ by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) will be performed in our church which is the Rosary Shrine of the Archdiocese of Westminster. The first concert was performed in December 2017: five sonatas meditating on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary with Nicolette Moonen of ‘The Bach Players’ on violin and Pawel Siwczak on organ.

Reviews for that candlelit concert were extremely positive. Rick Jones, writing for ‘The Tablet’, observed that “St Dominic’s was in effect built for such a performance and it seemed surprising that Biber’s Rosary Sonatas had never been performed there before. Architecturally, the building is one of the marvels of the Gothic Revival, constructed to designs by Charles Alban Buckler.” He noted that the music was “performed with the beauty of poetic prayers  in a sacred and much loved space” and he declared these concerts to be “well worth making space for in your new diary.”

The Sorrowful Mysteries will be the focus of the upcoming concert which will take place during Lent. The concert will be framed by Lenten Dominican chant led by the Dominican friars. Tickets cost £12.50 each, or £5 for students. Under-18s have free entry. Tickets are available online from TicketSource, or from the church Repository after Sunday Masses, or on the door on 24 February.

Liturgical Music Workshop

Liturgical Music Workshop

On Saturday 28 October, our Rosary Processions culminate with a candlelit Rosary Vigil from 7pm – 9:30pm. There will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by beautiful reflective music from the Dominican Liturgical Centre (DLC) in Krakow, Poland; the DLC provided music at the Mercy Center during World Youth Day in Krakow.

Young people will give reflections on the Rosary during the Vigil, and Confessions will also be heard at this time. Then, there will Eucharistic Procession through the church with the praying of the Rosary, ending with a great hymn in praise of Our Lady. The music for the Vigil will be led by a Dominican friar from Krakow, and by the Polish composer Pawel Bebenek. The video below gives us a taste of his music and the DLC ‘style’ which met with great acclaim from young people and bishops at World Youth Day 2016:

During the day on 28 October, before the Rosary Vigil, Pawel Bebenek will also give a lecture on the Sacred Liturgy and Music, followed by a Music Workshop. We invite all parish musicians, worship leaders, teachers, and chaplains, as well as young musicians to please book and come to this event, which promises to “promote the beauty of the Liturgy and enhance the quality of liturgical music” for young people. The DLC believe that the point of liturgical music is “not to create something ‘new’ or ‘exciting’, but rather to tap into the sound of the eternally prayerful: the simplicity of the human voice, singing in four parts, influenced by the tradition of both Christian West and East. The addition of orchestral instruments serves to bring a variety of colours to the enterprise, but is meant only to reinforce the impact of the text and deepen the prayers of the worshipper.”

Bookings for the workshop can be made with Eventbrite, or contact <dym@english.op.org>

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Rosary Shrine invites you to come and celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary’s feast day at her Shrine in London! On Saturday 7th October, join us for a Solemn Mass celebrated at 12 noon by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon OP, followed by a reception in Blackfriars Hall.

Then, on 7th October at 7pm (after the 6pm Vigil Mass), there will be a torchlit Marian Rosary Procession in the church. In this centenary year of Our Lady of the Rosary’s apparitions in Fatima, this statue will be taken in solemn procession around the Rosary Shrine church every Saturday in October at 7pm.

We hope you’ll join us in prayer and thanksgiving for Our Lady’s favours granted through the Holy Rosary.

As St Padre Pio said: “Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.”

Daily Adoration

Daily Adoration

“I want to encourage everyone to visit – if possible, every day – especially amid life’s difficulties, the Blessed Sacrament of the infinite love of Christ and His mercy. He is reserved in our churches but often abandoned. Visit Him to speak filially with Him, to listen to Him in silence, and to peacefully entrust yourself to Him” – Pope Francis.

Beginning on 14th September 2017, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the main Altar of the church for adoration. This will be done every weekday after the 7:30 am daily Mass (i.e., from around 8 am) until 9:45 am, just before the 10am daily Mass.

This is in addition to the Holy Hours at 7 pm on Wednesday (during the Youth 2000 Prayer Group); 5 pm on Thursday, and 10:30am on Saturday.

The Lord says: “Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:23). So, let us go to him, present in the Blessed Sacrament, and let us receive his mercy, his strength, and his peace. May the Lord Jesus renew and refresh our parish and all who come to this Rosary Shrine.
